Heroin addicts dominant among China's 937,000 registered drug abusers

SHENZHEN, Dec. 20 (Xinhua) -- China has 937,000 registered drug abusers, including more than 743,000 heroin addicts, public security authorities said here on Thursday.
"We will try our best to educate, save and help the addict and reduce the harm of drugs," said Zhang Xinfeng, Public Security vice minister.
No details of the abusers were available. But according to a report by the Public Security Ministry in 2006, nearly 70 percent of the drug abusers were below 35.
Official reports by the Health Ministry said there were an estimated 700,000 people living with HIV/AIDS in China. Among the 50,000 newly discovered cases, 42 percent were infected by needle sharing.
